Scope
While still a relatively new area of study, there are a variety of resources available for those researching the history, experiences, and perspectives of women. College Library provides a selection of these resources here; many can be accessed electronically, while others can be found in the Reference Collection. Consult the internal navigation in the Overview and Internet Sites sections, for a list of topics featured in this guide. Reference Databases
Cairns Collection of American Women Writers to 1920: Author List
The list of authors in the William B. Cairns Collection of American Women Writers to 1920 at present includes over 2,000 names. Regularly maintained, it is updated twice a year as new materials are acquired. The non-circulating collection is housed in the Department of Special Collections, 990 Memorial Library, but other copies and editions of many of the titles included can be found in the regular stacks. The collection is entirely accessible via MadCat, the UW Madison Libraries Online Catalog.
Directory of Sources for Women's History in Ireland 1997 - 1999 (not updated)
This site contains information and descriptions of more than 14,000 collections and sources in 262 repositories in the Republic of Ireland and in Northern Ireland compiled from a survey conducted between 1997 and 1999. All periods of Irish women's history are included, from the earliest recorded times to the present. The main criteria were that the collections contained material about women’s lives and roles. The Directory provides information on repositories, details regarding access to the material, the name of the collection, where such exists, the manuscript reference number which allows that document or collection to be seen within the repository, and a description of the material. Directory of Women's Media Current (updated irregularly)
This is a directory of media owned and operated primarily by, for and about women. Sections list print periodicals, Internet periodicals, publishers, media organizations, and other women's media (news services, radio, film, and video groups, news and media web sites, bookstores, listservs, and selected other directories). Coverage is international. The listings within the sections may be viewed either in alphabetical order or geographically by U.S. state and foreign country.
Women in Politics: Bibliographic Database 1948 - to date (updates vary)
Women in Politics is an international database on women in politics, created and maintained by the Inter-Parliamentary Union with contribution from the United Nations Development Programme. It contains citations (many annotated) to articles, books, reports, brochures, legal instruments, and other types of material dealing with women's participation in political life. It can be searched by type of document, country, region, organization, author, broad subject, keyword, language, year of publication, or periodical name. There are more than 1,000 citations in the database, with about 120-150 being added each year. Most of the material indexed is in English, French, or Spanish, with some others in Arabic, Dutch, Finnish, German, Italian, or Portuguese; subject headings are all in English. Contemporary Women's Issues 1992 - to date (updated bi-weekly)
CWI provides full-text (text-only) access to journals, newsletters, reports, pamphlets, bibliographies, fact sheets, and other material on a broad array of women and gender-related issues around the world. As of August 1999, there were 30,000 individual items in the database from some 1900 sources, including more than 100 journals. All articles are in English. Feminae: Medieval Women and Gender Index 1994 - to date (updated bimonthly)
Feminae is a multilingual scholarly index covering journal articles from 1994 to the present from almost 400 journals, book reviews, and essays in books about women, sexuality, and gender during the Middle Ages (450 CE to 1500 CE). It excludes books written by a single author. Special searching includes subjects found in Feminae's thesaurus, region, century, language, and primary evidence (type of document). Some entries include abstracts, but they are not searchable. As of May 2001, there were about 5,000 records in the database.

Studies on Women and Gender Abstracts 1999 - to date (updated 6 times/year)
Studies on Women and Gender Abstracts provides paragraph-long summaries of articles in a variety of English-language journals from around the world. The articles focus on education, employment, women in the family and community, medicine and health, female sex and gender role socialization, social policy, the social psychology of women, women's culture, media treatment of women, biography, literary criticism, and historical studies. Though some of the journals abstracted are entirely on women and gender, most are more general. For earlier years, see the print version and its earlier name, Studies on Women Abstracts.
ViVa: Bibliography of Women's History in Historical and Women's Studies Journals 1995 - to date (updates vary)
Viva is a bibliography of citations to scholarly articles about women's and gender history. Articles published in English, French, German and Dutch are selected from more than a hundred European, American and Indian Journals. Viva is short for "Vrouwengeschiedenis in het Vaktijdschrift", which is Dutch for "Women's history in scholarly periodicals." Related topics such as prostitution, witchcraft, housework, sexuality, birth control, infanticide, gynecology, and masculinity are also included. The easiest way to use Viva is to click on Search and enter search term(s), but it may also be browsed by year of publication and historical period. The years 1975-1994 are in progress.
Women's Resources International 1972 - to date (updated semiannually)
Women's Resources International is a composite of ten contributing databases covering women's studies, women's issues, and gender-focused scholarship from throughout the world. Corresponds to Women's Studies Abstracts (1984-); New Books on Women & Feminism (1987-); Women of Color and Southern Women 1975-1988, and annual supplements (1989-); WAVE: Women's Audiovisuals in English: A Guide to Nonprint Resources in Women's Studies, and other databases and print publications. It contains more than 230,000 citations to books, book reviews, articles, and reports. More than 500 academic, popular, and grassroots periodicals are selectively represented. FedStats Dates Vary (updated continually)
FedStats provides access to the statistics found in the publications of more than 70 United States federal government agencies. Searches on FedStats provide direct links to federal agency statistical publications in both full-text and tabular format.
Statistical Universe 1973 - to date (updated monthly)
Statistical Universe contains abstracting and indexing data for more than 5,000 federal statistical publications per year from 1973 to the present contained in ASI (American Statistics Index). Statistical Universe also contains the full text of more than 800 U.S. government statistical publications from 1995 to 1997, including the Statistical Abstract of the United States. Starting in 1998, monthly updates add up to 650 full-text statistical publications each year. In addition there are many links to full-text documents on government Web sites (verified daily). Information and tables are frequently available in a variety of formats, including GIF, XLS, CSV, and PDF.
