Poets Laureate Speak... As part of the Wisconsin Book Festival, two current Poets Laureate, Susan Firer and Fabu Carter Brisco, along with two finalists for the state Poet Laureate position, John Lehman and B.J. Best, presented programs, plans and ideas for bringing poetry to the Wisconsin public, and also read from their work. Andrea Musher, former Madison Poet Laureate, facilitated. (October 2008)
Alistair McCartney Reading ... On Thursday, Oct. 16, from 3-4:30 pm, Aussie-writer Alistair McCartney read from his darkly comic debut, The End of the World Book, which is at once an experimental novel, a metafictional memoir, and an encyclopedia (A-Z) of observations, obsessions, and philosophical fixations. The presentation was sponsored by the LGBT Campus Center, UW-Madison Lectures Committee, UW Press and College Library. (October 2008)

Illumination Poetry Reading ...The Open Book Café hosted an open mic poetry reading on Tuesday, October 13, at 6 p.m. Twelve poets read to an audience of approximately thirty people. (October 2008)

Welcome back for Fall Semester ... Changes for fall include more electrical outlets on the 3rd floor, new iMacs in Open Book, new chairs in the CMC, and expanded seating in Room 3191. Library staff are always interested in hearing from those who use (and love) College Library. New Issue of Illumination Now Available ... The Spring 2008 issue of Illumination: The Undergraduate Journal of Humanities is now available at the Information Desk at College Library. The journal features artwork by sixteen undergraduate artists including the provocative cover image by Ellen Siebers. A number of those artists currently have work featured on the walls of Open Book, Room 1250, in College Library. Also included in the issue are a number of literary efforts, both poetry and prose, and an essay by Adam Sitte entitled on "Mutaween: The Acceptablity of Religious Police and Moral Authority in Islamic Law." This year's editor-in-chief is Stephanie Krubsack. (May 2008)

Finals Time at College Library ... As part of a suite of events designed to help our patrons do their best during the final exam period, College Library offered candy, fortune cookies, stress relievers, and even a coloring day from May 7 through May 13. Other highlights included visits by Bucky Badger, sidewalk chalk, and puzzles. The Open Book Café offered free coffee (no specialty coffees), tea, and hot chocolate from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Friday, May 9. The following day, Saturday, May 10, GUTS sponsored a drop-in study session (complete with coffee and doughnuts while supplies last). The library also sponsored a free, drop-in, exam prep/study skills session on Wednesday, May 7. In conjunction with GUTS (Greater University Tutoring Service), the session was held in the library's classroom - Room 1193D. (May 2008)

Pens & Highlighters ... The Open Book Café stocked a supply of pens and highlighters for sale to help those studying at the library. Similar items (index cards, batteries, CD-ROMs, etc.) are also available in the vending machine in the CMC/Infolab in Room 2250 of College Library. (May 2008)

Career Services Teams Up with College Library - Staff members from the L & S Career Services Office were on hand Tuesday, April 22, and Friday, April 25, to provide résumé advice and career counseling to interested patrons. (April 2008)

Culture of Sharing Student Forum - The University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries sponsored a forum for students covering a variety of issues related to the culture of sharing made possible by the technologies of the Internet. This event engaged students in answering questions of what is possible and what are their rights and responsibilities in the information world. Nelson Pavlosky from the national student organization Students for Free Culture provided an overview of issues. For more details see the Web site. (April 2008)

College Library, in conjunction with the Undergraduate Symposium, invited students to apply for the first annual Undergraduate Research Awards. The Undergraduate Research Awards celebrate excellence and creativity in undergraduate library research. See their Web site for more information. (March 2008)

Pardon Our Noise - During the weeks before Spring Break, the wiring at College Library is being upgraded as part of the 21st century project on campus. As a result, intermittent drilling will be heard in various sections of the library between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. most weekdays. Apologies for any inconvenience! (March 2008)

READ with Alando - Alando Tucker, Wisconsin men's basketball senior forward and National Player of the Year finalist, is the focus of the newest READ poster created by the UW-Madison Libraries. The photograph for the poster, a promotion for National Library Week in April, was taken in front of books in the Ethnic Studies Collection, Room 1193, at College Library. Around the World: UW-Madison Celebrates 2006 Year of Study Abroad featured two dozen photographs displayed on the third floor of College Library. The photographs were taken by UW-Madison students studying abroad and provided a glimpse into that experience in Asia, Europe, Africa, and South America. The exhibition was arranged by the Division of International Studies. (January 2007)

The Capital Times Reporter Aaron Nathans featured College Library in an article entitled "Beyond Books: Cafés and Comfy Furniture Help Keep UW Libraries Viable" published in the Saturday, March 4, edition. He interviewed several students at the library including Ada Ruiz who said about the café, "I don't think the library would be as cool without it. It's kind of a hang-out spot." (March 2006)

Re-designed Study Spaces in College Library: Over the summer a number of large tables (some with incandescent lighting) have been added to Rooms 1191, 3191, and 3250 at College Library. Furniture has also been re-arranged on the 2nd and 3rd floors to improve both comfort and access to electricity. This, along with the over 100 outlets added in the past year, means that more students will be able to plug in their laptops and take advantage of the improved wireless now available throughout Helen C. White Hall. (September 2005)

The Open Book Collection has board games! If you're feeling the need for a study break or the desire for some serious competition, you'll be pleased to hear that a number of board games have been added to the Open Book Collection in Room 1250. In addition to old standbys such as chess, checkers and Scrabble, newer games including Jenga, Balderdash, Trivial Pursuit, and Mastermind are also available to be played within the library. Just return them to the shelf when done! (June 2005)

College Library supports Illumination: The Undergraduate Journal of Humanities, an undergraduate journal that represents some of the finest work being done on the University of Wisconsin campus. The inaugural issue contains six poems, three short stories, five essays, three articles and an abundance of diverse student art. These selections were chosen from over 500 student submissions. Check out the on-line version and support the intellectual and creative endeavors of students at UW-Madison! (May 2005)
